Abstract

The objective pursued with the present work is to expose, through two concrete examples (Gerda Wegener and Violette Morris) who coincide in space and time (the Paris of the first decades of the 20th century), along with a journey more synthetic about other cases, how these men and women were visibilized and received by society, who, at an early date, had the audacity to claim a gender that had nothing to do with the gender that had been assigned to them at birth but that, however, was the one which they identified with. These acts supposed a rupture with the current vision, binary and immovable of gender in moments of risk and great obstacles for what they supposed of transgression of the established and accepted, but also opened the way and guaranteed the success of future cases. For this we will analyze the images that were created (paintings, cartoons and photographs) and the contemporary texts published with a critical vision, sometimes ruthless, of these transformations.
